Peruvian Music.
We are fortunate to have him as a resident artist in the “Montgomery College World Arts
Festival”.

The first time I heard Billy play his music it was an accident. I had gone to attend a concert at the school, really just to earn some extra credit for my class in creative writing. I was soon transported into a world of international music and when Billy and his group took the stage and played Panalivio, the audience moved from listening to music to feeling and living the music. Billy's music made a lasting impression on me and even up to a year later I kept reliving that performance. I knew I was not the only one that had felt Billy's music that night, and I imagined how wonderful it would be to share the power of that music with more people. That's when I thought about making a documentary.
Once I asked Billy what his goal was. He said his mission was to "spread his music". Having heard Billy's music, I knew that that deceptively simple mission, held a promise that could transform people and could give them a new vision. It would be a great honor to help Billy, even in a small way, achieves his mission. Washington, March 14 2007

La primera vez que escuché a Billy interpretar su música fue por accidente. Fui a escuchar un concierto al College, en realidad solo para ganar créditos adicionales para mi clase de escritura creativa. Pronto fui transportado a un mundo de música internacional y, cuando Billy y su grupo subió al estrado e interpretaron el PANALIVIO, la audiencia cambió - de simplemente escuchar - a sentir y vivir la música. La música de Billy dejó una fuerte impresión en mí, tanto así, que aún un año después sigo reviviendo esa presentación. Sé que no soy el único que sintió esa noche la música de Billy, y me imagino lo maravilloso que sería compartir el poder de esa música con más gente. Es entonces cuando pensé en hacer un documental.
Una vez le pregunté a Billy cual era su meta. Me dijo que su misión era "difundir su música". Al haber escuchado la música de Billy, sé que esa aparente simple misión guarda una promesa que va a transformar a las personas y puede darles una nueva visión. We had the opportunity to have the most incredible jam sessions in our native land with our dearest friend Billy; we have a great admiration for his artistry and his great spirit for music. I was always impressed with his voice’s timbre, very strong and earthy; he plays the most incredible and unique marineras, music from the west of Peru. We just want to add to this great occasion of recognition to Billy Castillo for his long and intense carrier, our thoughts. We feel honored to have shared the stage together. To have a commanding, distinctive voice. To be heard. To be warmly enjoyed. That is what Billy Castillo delivery is all about. Of course there is more than 30 years of friendship to prove it. We have had the blessing to share with him a bunch of memorable music gatherings in Lima and its surroundings, with Peruvian masters and passionate and knowledgeable amateurs. Luckily, thanks to Billy’s artistry, audiences in the US can start to open up to the rest of tunes of songs from such a diverse cultural community as the Latin Americana is. More than bolero there is tondero. And Billy can do it both.
We remember once, in the 70’s, when we were recording the album El Carbón y sus Amigos in Lima. The ample recording studio allowed for accommodating a big crew. When the time came to record the chorus tracks, the sound engineer kept requesting to the one singer who was overwhelming the whole harmony, to step back once, again and again. By the time the sound engineer was happy with the volumes, Billy was almost cornered in a comfy area of the room.
Such a genuine voice and big heart can put aside the challenges and lack of information of the mainstream and can represent the wonder of our own voice. It stays forever in your soul.

Tener una dominante, voz distintiva. Para ser oído. Para ser realmente disfrutado. Es de lo que trata esta entrega de Billy Castillo. Por cierto son más de 30 años de amistad para demostrarlo. Nosotros hemos tenido la bendición para compartir con él un muchos encuentros de música memorables en Lima y sus alrededores, con los maestros peruanos y los aficionados apasionados y conocedores. Por suerte, gracias al talento artístico de Billy, los públicos en el EE.UU. pueden empezar a abrirse al resto de melodías de canciones de tal una comunidad cultural tan diversa como es la Latino Americana. Más que bolero hay tondero. Y Billy puede hacerlo ambos.
Nosotros recordamos una vez, en los 70, cuando nosotros estábamos grabando el álbum El Carbón y sus Amigos in Lima. El amplio estudio magnetofónico permitió acomodar un grupo grande. Cuando vino el tiempo de grabar las pistas del coro, el ingeniero de sonido siguió pidiendo a un cantante que opacaba la armonía entera, alejarse un paso atrás una y otra vez, de nuevo y de nuevo. Cuando el ingeniero de sonido estuvo contento con los volúmenes, Billy estaba casi acorralado en una esquina cómoda del cuarto.
Esa voz genuina y el corazón grande pueden apartar los desafíos y falta de información de la corriente principal y puede representar la maravilla de nuestra propia voz. Queda por siempre en el alma.
